Biography

A martial education at home

Donnie Yen (Yen Chi-tan) was born on 27 July 1963 in Guangzhou, southern China. His family moved to Hong Kong when he was two and to Boston when he was eleven. His mother, Bow-sim Mark, taught tai chi and internal wushu styles there, including Fu-style baguazhang and wudangquan. She started training him at four, first in tai chi, then in kung fu forms.

As a teenager he also tried taekwondo. His parents then sent him to Beijing to train with the Beijing Wushu Team, one of the toughest squads in the country. On his way back he stopped in Hong Kong and met fight choreographer Yuen Woo-ping, who became his mentor. Later, during a stay in the United States in the early 2000s, he added judo, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, wrestling, Muay Thai and boxing. He describes himself as a mixed martial artist.

The Yuen Woo-ping years

Yuen Woo-ping gave him his first lead in Drunken Tai Chi (1984), a kung fu comedy built on acrobatics and tai chi forms. The cop thrillers Tiger Cage (1988) and In the Line of Duty 4 (1989) showed a harder edge: tighter exchanges, high kicks and joint locks.

His breakthrough came in 1992 with Tsui Hark's Once Upon a Time in China II. He played General Nap-lan opposite Jet Li's Wong Fei-hung; their long-pole duel in an alley, staged by Yuen Woo-ping, is still one of the most quoted fights of the genre. New Dragon Gate Inn (1992), Iron Monkey (1993), in which he plays Wong Kei-ying, father of Wong Fei-hung, and Wing Chun (1994) with Michelle Yeoh followed. In 1995 he took on Chen Zhen, Bruce Lee's role in Fist of Fury, in a television series of the same name.

In 1997 he set up his company, Bullet Films, and made his directing debut with Legend of the Wolf, then Ballistic Kiss (1998). Hollywood hired him as actor and fight choreographer on Highlander: Endgame (2000), Blade II (2002) and Shanghai Knights (2003). In 2002, Zhang Yimou cast him as Sky in Hero, facing Jet Li again, this time with a spear.

SPL, Flash Point and the MMA turn

With director Wilson Yip he changed how Hong Kong films a fight. In SPL: Sha Po Lang (2005) he plays a police inspector and runs the action, including a telescopic baton against knife duel and a final bout with Sammo Hung. Flash Point (2007) blends striking, throws, ground locks and submissions, as in an MMA cage. Both films won him Best Action Choreography at the Hong Kong Film Awards, in 2006 and 2008. He has four in total, with The Twins Effect (2004) and Kung Fu Jungle (2015).

Ip Man and the international career

In 2008, again with Wilson Yip, he played Ip Man, the Wing Chun master who taught Bruce Lee. He spent nine months working on the style with Ip Chun, the master's eldest son. The film took 100 million yuan in China and led to three sequels: Ip Man 2 (2010) with Sammo Hung, Ip Man 3 (2015) with Mike Tyson, and Ip Man 4: The Finale (2019). Practitioners will spot the core principles: centreline control, chi sao and bursts of short straight punches.

Legend of the Fist (2010) brought him back to Chen Zhen, with choreography mixing Wing Chun, jeet kune do and MMA. 14 Blades (2010), Dragon (2011), The Lost Bladesman (2011), in which he plays Guan Yu, and The Monkey King (2014) followed. Western audiences found him in Rogue One (2016) as a blind, staff-wielding monk, then in xXx: Return of Xander Cage (2017), Mulan (2020) and John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023), where he plays the blind assassin Caine. In April 2025 he was announced as director of a spin-off built around that character.

He keeps directing in Hong Kong: Sakra (2023), a Jin Yong adaptation in which he plays Qiao Feng, then The Prosecutor (2024). Raging Fire (2021), Benny Chan's last film, confirmed his method: long fights shot in wide frames, where you see every blow land.
