Synopsis

Seventeen-year-old Daniel LaRusso moves with his mother from New Jersey to Reseda, in suburban Los Angeles. He falls for Ali, the ex-girlfriend of Johnny Lawrence, a student at the Cobra Kai dojo, who makes Daniel the target of his gang. Mr. Miyagi, the quiet handyman of his apartment complex and a native of Okinawa, gets him out of trouble and agrees to teach him karate. A date is set: the All Valley tournament, against the boys who bully him.

Why watch it

The Karate Kid opened in the United States in June 1984. John G. Avildsen, an Oscar winner for Rocky (1976), returned to the underdog formula and to composer Bill Conti. Screenwriter Robert Mark Kamen drew on his own life: beaten up by a gang at 17, he had taken up martial arts to defend himself. The film became one of the year's biggest hits, earning around 100 million dollars in the United States and Canada.

Karateka behind the camera

The fights were choreographed by Pat E. Johnson, a Tang Soo Do black belt who had worked with Chuck Norris at his schools and appeared alongside Bruce Lee in Enter the Dragon (1973). He also plays the tournament's head referee. Fumio Demura, a Japanese karate master based in California, doubled for Pat Morita in the action scenes. That team is why the techniques look clean and close to what you would see in a club: guards, front kicks, sweeps.

Two ways of teaching

The film sets two dojos against each other. Cobra Kai, run by John Kreese, preaches aggression and "no mercy". Mr. Miyagi teaches differently: he has Daniel sand, paint and wax before explaining anything, and each repeated motion turns out to be a block. Anyone who trains will recognise the focus on fundamentals, repetition until it becomes automatic, and the idea that karate is first about avoiding a fight. The crane stance, practised on a beach, became one of the best-known images in martial arts cinema. The final tournament is a point-fighting event, modelled on American karate competitions of the time.

Reception and legacy

Critics praised the chemistry between Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita, and Morita, until then known for comic roles, earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. The film launched a franchise: three sequels, a 2010 remake, the series Cobra Kai from 2018, which picks up the characters more than thirty years later, and Karate Kid: Legends in 2025. It is also credited with a wave of new students in American dojos in the mid-1980s.

Watching The Karate Kid again means returning to a simple coming-of-age story, carried by a teacher and student bond that anyone who has stepped into a dojo will understand.
