Synopsis

In a large Southeast Asian city, Wang Wei, a mute, widowed handyman, sees his daughter Rainy abducted by a child trafficking ring. The corrupt police do nothing. He goes after her alone and crosses paths with Navin, a journalist whose wife, Matia, vanished while investigating the same ring.

Why watch it

The Furious is one of the best-reviewed martial arts films of 2026. It is the directing debut of Kenji Tanigaki, the Japanese stuntman and action choreographer behind Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In. It premiered in TIFF's Midnight Madness section on 6 September 2025, won the Special Jury Award at Sitges and opened in US theaters on 12 June 2026 through Lionsgate.

A cast of fighters

Xie Miao, the child wushu star of Jet Li's 1990s films, plays the mute father who speaks only with his fists. Indonesia's Joe Taslim, a former national judo team member who broke out in The Raid, plays the journalist Navin. Yayan Ruhian, the pencak silat fighter and The Raid choreographer, plays Tak, a bow-wielding henchman. Thai star Jeeja Yanin, from Chocolate, plays the missing reporter. Brian Le and Joey Iwanaga round out the villains.

Six weeks of rehearsal

Produced by Bill Kong (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) on a budget of about $20 million, the film was shot in English in Bangkok from April to July 2024. The cast rehearsed the fights for about six weeks with Tanigaki's Japanese stunt team, and the police station assault and five-way finale took 18 days to shoot. Practitioners will spot styles that mix without blurring: wushu kicks, judo throws, silat knife work and close-range grappling.

Reception

At 98% on Rotten Tomatoes and 85 on Metacritic, it drew comparisons with The Raid, with critics faulting only the dialogue and dubbing. It grossed about $41.8 million worldwide and won Best Action Movie at the Critics' Choice Super Awards, plus Best Actor in an Action Movie for Xie Miao.
