Synopsis

Emperor Shao Kahn has conquered the realm of Edenia and raised Kitana as his own daughter. Twenty years later, as the tenth Mortal Kombat tournament approaches, Raiden and Sonya Blade recruit new champions to defend Earth, among them Johnny Cage, a fading action-movie star who initially says no.

Why watch it

Sequel to the 2021 reboot

Mortal Kombat II follows the 2021 film, again directed by Simon McQuoid, and adapts the second game in Ed Boon and John Tobias's series from a script by Jeremy Slater. The headline addition is Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, a martial arts movie star living off past glory, introduced through a mock B-movie called Uncaged Fury. Ludi Lin (Liu Kang), Lewis Tan (Cole Young), Jessica McNamee (Sonya Blade) and Josh Lawson (Kano) return, with Adeline Rudolph as Kitana.

A tournament movie

Like the 1995 version, it is built around a tournament where every fighter has a style and a weapon. Realism is not the point: magic, powers and gory fatalities come with the territory. The appeal lies in the range of match-ups and the stunt work, runner-up for Best Stunts at the Astra Midseason Movie Awards. It was shot at Village Roadshow Studios on Australia's Gold Coast between June 2023 and January 2024, with a break during the SAG-AFTRA strike.

Reception

Made for $80 million, it grossed $129.5 million worldwide, opening to $38.5 million in North America. Reviews were mixed (63% on Rotten Tomatoes, 46 on Metacritic), and audiences gave it a B CinemaScore.
